Plain arithmetic: each leaf swings into the yard by its own width. Hinges and gaps add a few centimetres.
Folding gate options
Bi-fold (2-fold)
Two leaves fold to one side. For a pedestrian gate or a short opening.
3-fold
Three leaves to one side, or two on one side and one on the other.
4-fold
Two leaves each side. The usual choice for a car gate.
Hardware
Heavy hinges at each fold, drop bolts to hold the leaves, a wheel under long leaves.
Folding, sliding (rolling) or swing?
A folding gate suits a short driveway where a swing gate would hit the car, and a wall too short for a sliding gate. Many people call a sliding gate on wheels a “rolling gate”; it needs straight wall beside the opening — compare them in sliding vs swing gate.
A gate on the street must open into your yard: the building code does not allow gates under 2.40 m to project beyond the property line when open (PD 1096 IRR, Sec. 1007).

What is a folding gate?
A gate whose leaves are hinged to each other and fold together when opened, so it needs less space than a swing gate.
3-fold or 4-fold?
4-fold (two leaves each side) is usual for a car gate. 3-fold fits when the gate can open to one side only.
How much space does a folding gate need?
About one leaf’s width inside the yard: on a 4 m opening, 1 m for a 4-fold gate.
Is a rolling gate the same as a folding gate?
No. A rolling gate usually means a sliding gate on wheels; a folding gate swings in on hinges.
