Steel stair types
Straight
One run along the wall. Needs the most length in front of the house.
L-shaped with a landing
Turns at a landing when the straight run does not fit.
Roof-deck access
A stair from the top floor to the roof deck, often steeper and narrower.
Steps and footing
Checkered plate, steel grating or a concrete-filled pan; the bottom on a concrete pad, the top bolted to the slab.
Planning a steel staircase
Measure the height from floor to floor, the open space in front of the stairs, and the width you want. A house stair needs at least 750 mm clear width and 2.00 m headroom (PD 1096 IRR, Sec. 708 and 1207).
Near the sea, outdoor steel stairs need primer and top coat, or galvanized steel. A stainless handrail is an option — see stainless steel fabrication.
