Choosing a balcony railing

  • Height

No Philippine figure for houses; the US house code uses 914 mm, commercial and workplace rules 1.07 m.

  • Gaps

Under 100 mm. Vertical bars are harder for children to climb than horizontal ones.

  • Handrail

A flat or round top rail you can lean on; stainless is an option.

  • Posts

Welded to plates bolted to the slab edge, or set into the concrete.

Railing height and gaps

The Philippine code asks for a railing on a balcony more than 750 mm above the ground (PD 1096 IRR, Sec. 1209) but sets no height or gap for houses. As references: the US house code asks for guards at least 36 in (914 mm) high with gaps a 4-inch (100 mm) sphere cannot pass (IRC R312.1.2–R312.1.3; text as adopted in Baltimore).

For commercial buildings and workplaces, US rules put the top rail at 42 in (1.07 m) (OSHA 1910.29). For a house, choose a height between the two that suits the people who use the balcony.

Balcony railings near the sea

Balconies take sun, rain and salt air. Within one kilometre of the sea, ISO 9223 puts steel in corrosion class C4 (HDGASA, based on ISO 9223): ask for primer and top coat, galvanized steel, or stainless steel.
